I had this quilt quilted with the orange peel quilting design. I love how it turned out! I have bound it with the same green as shown on the leaves, though I don't have a final photo to add at the moment. The quilt is on the back of my couch and greets all who come in my house during this beautiful fall season!

Vickiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14991388628921829106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3679877837022998624.post-72797754748041796782020-10-07T19:59:00.026-07:002020-10-08T20:23:03.086-07:00Bob's T-Shirt Quilt
This has been a process--a true labor of love! I got these t-shirts from my brother a couple of years ago. I looked at them, bought a book, packed them away and then took a class and things fell into place! The quilt is now hanging in its new home, surrounded by the cars that inspired the quilt.

Vickiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14991388628921829106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3679877837022998624.post-70198007989773458902020-10-06T20:26:00.002-07:002020-10-08T20:35:36.134-07:00Claire's Quilt and Jelly Roll Rug

I made this quilt not really knowing who it was for, but after looking at the fabric honoring Anne of Green Gables, Claire was the natural one to give it to. As I watched her love the outdoors and spend hours holding the baby goats next door to her house, it made sense that it was hers! I gave her the quilt and then made the matching jelly roll rug to give her for her birthday later this month.

Vickiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14991388628921829106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3679877837022998624.post-4541967866205803392020-01-29T20:35:00.003-08:002020-02-07T09:06:10.936-08:00First project started in 2020

I finished the project below on February 3, 2020. I'd say I set a record for myself, but this was such a big project that took so much space, I had to finish it. I'm happy to have my downstairs pretty much to myself, because I took over the ping pong table, the family room floor and all of the spaces in my sewing room. I love the quilt and will enjoy looking at all of those reproduction fabrics I have been collecting for years. I have lots of leftover 2 inch squares and yards of reproduction fabrics, so more projects to come! Quilting and binding are the next step.
I made copies of this Santa, gave them to friends and kept one for myself. I don't know what happened to mine, but when I saw this fabric, I had to have it! It is the same Santa I grew up with!

I bought a kit from Shabby Fabrics and made a cutting error....darn it! I then had to wait until this fabric came available again this summer to work on the quilt. It is a work in progress.
When I saw this quilt kit at Fat Quarter Shop, I had to make it too! My grandchildren came by and helped scatter the prints in the layout. The little ones started running over it and started scattering fabric in a different way! It gave me great motivation to get it sewn together and off of the floor!
I made several over the years, but liked this variation. I saw the Mrs. Miller's Apprentice fabric line and bought fat quarter bundles of the blues and cream and felt it would make a beautiful log cabin quilt! I love the fabric and the end result. I have yet to add a border to this quilt. It isn't big, but it is beautiful!
Black and White Snowball Quilt

For my birthday last year, I received a beautiful bundle of black and white Riley Blake fabrics. I looked and looked for a pattern that would do this beautiful fabric justice. I found a snowball Kim Diehl pattern that I loved and also found a beautiful red and white snowball on Pinterest. I combined the 2 patterns and put my black and white twist on their ideas. It is still a work in progress, but I think it is beautiful!

Journey's End Block of the Month

I started a 6 month block of the month program in November with Quilter's Lodge in Draper, UT. It is a Kim Diehl design using her beautiful fabric. I have come to the end of the blocks (5 months worth) and now I get to sash them, connect them and make a beautiful border. I love this quilt!

I finished this top in April! I love this quilt. It isn't quilted yet....
I love this jelly roll rug. I bought 2 jelly rolls, arranged the colors just a bit and got started! (The pattern calls for 2 jelly rolls, but I used 1 1/2 since my space in front of my door is a bit smaller.)
I have started many projects this year, but have really only finished one so far. This quilt was made for a special cousin. I squared up about 360 HSTs for this project. Truly a labor of love! I love my cousin and I love this quilt.
We moved this year from Las Vegas to Utah. It was a busy year preparing for a move, buying and selling houses, unpacking, settling in, and figuring out my to new routine. The adjustment isn't over yet!

I've worked on a few projects, but look forward to a more productive 2019!

This fall I made a new table runner from https://www.theclothparcel.com/make-this-fall-pumpkin-table-runner-tutorial/ and loved having it on my table.

This quilt was made for my good friend and bike riding partner, Dana. During this project, I learned that I can't live without my wonder clips! I had no idea how much easier binding was using them.

This quilt finally got finished in 2018. I started it in 2010, had it pieced and quilted a couple of years ago, and as we settled in our new home, quiet hours hand binding were a welcome relief from the busy chaos of a move.
I also made a couple of jelly roll rugs. I look at jelly rolls very differently now. I look forward to making another one!
As the 4 of us calculated how much flannel we would need, we only bought twice as much flannel as we needed! This left me with 2 kits of 16 beautiful flannels. This year, I finally finished the 2 quilts and gifted them to 2 of my married children and their spouses.
I made another "Turning Sixteen" Christmas quilt for Rebecca and Dave and their family. Moda came out with their "I Love Snow" flannel this year and it perfectly matched the decor of their home. They also have 5 sweet children, so this was the right flannel for their quilt. The bundle I purchased had only 13 fat quarters and I needed 16 fabrics. I added some minky and I love how their quilt came out!
That person was my grandson! I dusted the top off, got it quilted and bound! He turns 8 this year and is even having a Star Wars party to celebrate!
I no longer teach school (being home makes a big difference), so on the 15th of each month, I download the pattern and get busy! I'm really enjoying this project from The Fat Quarter Shop!
Many years ago, I bought a Meet Me In Paris quilt kit. The kit contained fabrics that I didn't usually work with--floral prints that were very soft and subdued. I was looking for something different to do and was intrigued with the Dresden Plate pattern incorporated in the pattern. This photo shows only a bit of the quilt. I gave this quilt to my sister, Yvonne.
This quilt was made for my friend, MaryKay. I have used this pattern before, but it is so beautiful, I didn't mind doing it again. MaryKay and her parents went on a trip to New Zealand and while there, she purchased fabric to turn into a quilt. It is stunning!
I don't suppose I'm the only quilter that has made a mistake that wasn't noticed until the quilt was quilted! I love reproduction fabrics and in my haste to get this quilt done, I didn't realize that one of my blocks was turned the wrong way! After it was quilted, I spotted the problem. So how do I deal with it? I chuckle when I see the wrong-way block and fold the quilt so it is hidden. It is still a great quilt to sit under! There are friends that mean so much to you that you want to do something for them. What else is there to do but make them a quilt?

I made this cat quilt for my friend Terri. It may look familiar, because I made one (different colors) for my children's piano teacher a few years earlier. It was just so perfect for my kitty loving friend, Terri, however, so I made her one too.

This quilt was made for my personal trainer, Melissa. She has made such a difference in my life and has become someone I can count on to help bring the best out in me. When I saw this quilt pattern, I knew I had to make it!
This quilt is a BQ that I made for Alayna when she lived in Denver. She came to love red and black at this time. This pattern showcased the beautiful fabrics she helped me pick out for her quilt. Surprisingly, I don't have a picture of this quilt after it was bound, but it is a beauty.
Claire's Quilt--Claire's quilt is a backed with minky and is not quilted. It is her "softy". The other children received a snuggle blanket with a print on one side and minky on the back for their 2nd birthdays. I chose to do this for Claire when she was a baby. She loves it!

Rebecca was married in May of 2006. This isn't a very good picture, but since I often use this quilt when I'm in Utah, I'll get a better picture when I am up there!
These photos are of Nathan and Rachel's quilt in progress. I started it before they were married, but they received it on their 1 year anniversary---what can I say! I can't believe I don't have a photo of the finished product! I'll get one, for sure.
Here is the finished quilt and the sweet couple I made it for. I loved this pattern when I saw it. I liked making the scrappy 9 patches for the center of the stars.
Alayna will be married in one month. Her quilt is well underway. I found a quilt kit a little late in the game, but it might get finished. It just lacks borders, quilting and binding. Fingers crossed that I make it! I am posting what my sewing room floor looked like this week.

Completed and beautiful!
My daughter, Alayna, loved the color purple and also love roses, so this was perfect for her. I hung this quilt from the railing in my house for years. We never put it on her bed--fear of nail polish! Now her color preferences have changed, I guess I'll keep enjoying it until she is ready to take it home. (2002)
This is Rebecca's courthouse steps quilt. She chose the fabric with the intention of making this quilt. The life of a busy teenager kept her from doing it, but it got done. The fabric was bright and sparkly with Volkswagens in the centers.
I Spy Quilt--I made this quilt with a group of quilters in Glendale, Arizona. We all brought fabric with cute designs and shared them so we each got a nice variety of prints. I love this quilt and love having my grandchildren look for the different prints and characters. (2002)
Star Quilt--I made this quilt for my dear friend, Becky Lowe. She was my walking partner and my children's piano teacher for years when we lived in Glendale, AZ. She was such a good friend and loved my children so much, I loved making it for her. (2003)
In June of 2003, we moved to Las Vegas and I had a very difficult time adjusting to this move. In January, I decided I had to do something to save my sanity! I went to a Saturday "Block of the Month" at a local quilt shop. I was pleasantly surprised to see a woman from my church/ward walk in. I visited with her that day and that was the beginning of a great friendship. I became part of a quilting "square" with Brenda, Susan and Bernice. Over the years, we have added other quilters to our group, but, that original "square" changed my life!
Sometime around 2010, my friend, Teri F., was going through some very difficult times. She had health issues and was headed to a hospital in California for more tests to diagnose her problems. I gave her this quilt in hopes that she would remember she had friends that loved her. She fought this battle and later won her battle with ovarian cancer. I hope she knows that when she wraps herself up in this quilt, it's a hug from me! Go Teri!
I made this beautiful red, white and blue quilt for my son, Brandon. He has always been interested in military service. I consider him a patriot! This is a large quilt (queen sized) that I made for him in about 2005. April of 2019, this quilt made its way with my son to Ft. Rucker, AL for Warrant Officer's School and pilot training. I love the quilt, but most of all, my son.
I made Irish Chain quilt in 1993 for a neighbor at Langley AFB. She had a very difficult pregnancy and I wanted to do something special for her. I found this photo in my journal--I had forgotten all about having made this!
Other Projects (photos to come)

Debbie Mumm Santa--This is still one of my favorite Christmas quilt projects. I put it out every year!

Garden Twist--This is my mother's quilt, kept in her house in Arizona. She had plans to sew this quilt and I believe she even had it cut out. I took it home and finished it for her.

Sunflower Quilt--My daughter, Rebecca, loves sunflowers. We made this quilt when we moved to Arizona and she decorated her room with sunflowers.
As I said before, my first quilts were log cabin quilts. I made a large pink and blue log cabin quilt in my class that I later turned into 2 smaller quilts. What happened to them? I don't know, but it doesn't matter.

When I took my class, I was fascinated with the quilting tools and the how things went together if you were precise in cutting and in your seam width! Rotary cutters and acrylic strips were new at this time. When we moved to Texas, I did a demonstration for a women's group at church and the older quilters were stunned that it was so easy to cut strips! I could cut out a quilt in a fraction of the time that it had taken them all of their lives! If I was using rulers and scissors, my quilts would not have been quite so enjoyable to make.

This log cabin quilt was made in 1987. My mother came to Texas when my daughter, Rebecca, was born and we pinned it with safety pins, quilted it on my sewing machine and struggled with the binding and those mitered corners!

While she was in Texas, we also made her first log cabin quilt. She has made many beautiful quilts as a result of that first log cabin! This wasn't her first quilt--we spent many hours as children stitching lazy daisy stitches all over the overall and flannel quilts in our basement--but, this was her first pieced quilt. I take credit for all of the beautiful pieced quilts she has made since that time ;).
The second quilt class I took was an Irish Chain class. At the time, I didn't understand how wonderful cotton fabrics were to work with. I went to a local fabric store, not the quilt shop, for fabric for my Irish Chain. I sat in the mall with graph paper and colored pencils trying to figure out what colors to make my quilt. I wanted to make something bright, as this was going to be a quilt for my baby that was on the way, Brandon. I made this Irish Chain for him and now, we use it every night to cover his bird's cage. I guess it belongs to Olive now.
My mother made clothes when I was young, but the sewing bug never bit me. After getting married and moving to Hawaii, I was a bit lonely and needed to do something! A military wife and friend, named Vera Schmella, suggested I take a quilting class with her. We took an Eleanor Burns log cabin quilt class and I was hooked!

Over the years, I have made many quilts and I love them all! It is time for me to have a place to go to look at them and think about them! I suppose the pictures may be out of sequence, but I am going to do my best to post as many quilts as I can to document this important part of my life!

My quilting buddy, Susan, gave me a journal to document my quilts many years ago. I put pictures and descriptions in that book and I'm so glad! There were pictures and descriptions of quilts I forgot I made in that journal. Many of the photos are pre-cellphone camera photos that are not the best quality, but were easily found in one location, making it easier to share now!

This blog won't include all of my quilting projects, but as many as I have pictures for. It will mean the most to me, but I hope others enjoy it as well.
